Dylan Hopkins threw for one touchdown and ran for another to lead UAB to a 34-0 win over Southern Miss on Saturday. Noah Wilder had 14 tackles to lead a defense that held the Golden Eagles to 107 yards of offense and Grayson Cash blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone. Hopkins and Gerrit Prince hooked up for a 34-yard touchdown on the first play of the second quarter and then Cash made his big play on special teams barely a minute later to put the Blazers (5-2, 3-0 Conference USA) up 17-0. DeWayne McBride scored on a 31-yard run the next time UAB got the ball and late in the quarter Hopkins capped a drive with a short run and the Blazers led 31-0. Matt Quinn's second field goal, a 52-yarder in the third quarter, was the only scoring in the second half. McBride had 137 yards rushing on 17 carries. The Golden Eagles (1-6, 0-3) had one turnover and nine punts. - UAB/AP College Football

Dylan Hopkins threw three first-half touchdown passes, including a 65-yard bomb to Tre Shropshire to start the second quarter, and Alabama-Birmingham took a 21-0 lead, then held on to post a 28-21 win over Tulane on Saturday night. Starting just the sixth game of his career, Hopkins threw three touchdown passes for the second straight game and his 240 yards on 18-for-26 passing is a career-best.

Tulane staged a second-quarter rally to cut the deficit to 21-14 at intermission. Michael Pratt tossed a 20-yard touchdown pass to Will Wallace and, after UAB missed a 38-yard field goal attempt, Pratt found Duece Wats with a 13-yard scoring strike. Jerm Brown Jr.'s 9-yard TD run pushed the Blazers' lead to 28-14 in the third quarter, but the Green Wave (1-3) scored in the fourth to cut the lead to a single score when Pratt found Jaetavia Toles with a 15-yard touchdown pass. Tulane fumbled an onside kick attempt at midfield on its final play of the game. Gerrit Prince had five receptions for 63 yards and two touchdowns for UAB (3-1). - UAB/AP College Football

Terry Wilson passed for 385 yards and his third touchdown pass of the game - a 58-yarder to Mannie Logan-Greene - powered New Mexico to a 34-23 victory over in-state rival New Mexico State on Saturday night. The hookup was the only touchdown of the second half as the defense for each team held tight in red-zone situations. Leading 24-20 in the third quarter, the Lobos (2-0) twice drove inside the 10 and came away with only a field goal and a seven-point lead.

New Mexico State (0-2) then drove to inside the Lobos 20 but had to settle for a field goal of their own and a 27-23 deficit. Wilson's throw to Logan-Greene early in the fourth quarter gave the Lobos a two-score lead they would not relinquish. In addition to Wilson's 385 yards through the air, the Lobos rushed for 178 yards for a total of 563. Bobby Cole had 107 yards rushing and one touchdown. The Lobos were penalized 12 times for 111 yards. The Aggies managed 263 yards. Dino Maldonado threw for 203 yards and two touchdowns. - New Mexico/AP College Football

Wilson tossed a pair of first-quarter TDs - connecting with Kyle Jarvis from 11 yards out and Trace Buckler for a 4-yarder and a 14-0 Lobos' lead. Tyson Thompson put the Huskies on the scoreboard with a 44-yard punt return TD and Gino Garcia added a 45-yard field goal to pull HBU within 14-10 with 4:27 remaining in the half. Wilson answered with a 47-yard scoring strike to Keyonta Lanier to put the Lobos up 21-10 at halftime. Andrew Shelley kicked a pair of field goals to account for New Mexico's second-half offense. Blaise Bentsen completed 27 of 47 passes for 196 yards and a score with two interceptions for Houston Baptist, an FCS school. Charles King had seven catches for 64 yards and a score.   Quarterback Terry Wilson, a senior transfer from Kentucky, won the University of New Mexico starting job that most everyone thought he would, UNM coach Danny Gonzales told his team on Tuesday before the Lobos' afternoon practice. The Lobos begin their 2021 season Sept. 2 at home vs. Houston Baptist. Not long after Wilson entered the transfer portal after going 17-8 at Kentucky, the Lobos set their focus on the quarterback because Gonzales and his staff sought a signal caller with experience after New Mexico's 2-5 2020 season. UNM offensive coordinator Derek Warehime helped with making a connection with Wilson, who played for Warehime's father, Nick, at Del City High School in Oklahoma.

Gonzales also wanted a winner. Wilson, in 2018 as a redshirt sophomore, led the Wildcats to their first 10-win season since 1977. That season featured a 27-16 Wildcats win at Florida for the first time since 1986, and ended with a 27-24 win over Penn State in the Citrus Bowl. "His experience from being a 25-game starter in Division I football really had a big hand on that (decision)," Gonzales told the media after practice. "I think he has a really good presence in the huddle. The guys seem to follow and we seem to click a little bit. "I think we have some depth at quarterback that's really exciting," the second-year head coach added. "But I think Terry, he's what we're looking for. He has experience at this level and it's kind of showing in the first two weeks of fall camp." - Albuquerque Journal

For the first half of Tuesday's football practice, the University of New Mexico defense was in control. But quarterback Terry Wilson and the Lobos' offense took over during the second half of practice, the team's first in pads during preseason camp. Overall, the Lobos have a long way to go before their opener Sept. 2, UNM coach Danny Gonzales said. "I don't think it was very good," Gonzales said of Tuesday's practice. "I thought it was a little bit softer than we like, which is a bad thing. First period wasn't very good, The last period I thought the offense picked it up a little bit." Wilson, a transfer from Kentucky, took the majority of the snaps with the first team and showed his dynamic running ability. Gonzales said Wilson's leadership stood out as well.

The Lobos coach said he has been trying to change it up for a different QB to take the most snaps each practice. "He's a playmaker," wide receiver Cjay Boone said of Wilson. "Terry is a great quarterback. He's one of my guys. We always get extra work in every day. "Some of things that stick out about Terry is his running ability. That man can run. He's just a veteran. He's been able to make great passes. Obviously he's not going to be perfect every time, but he's doing his thing." - Albuquerque Journal

University of New Mexico senior quarterback Tevaka Tuioti has waited nine months to gain clearance for football activities after he sustained his third reported concussion. He won't wait anymore. Tuioti, who won the starting job before the season last year, has not been cleared for the start of preseason fall camp, which begins Wednesday, UNM coach Danny Gonzales said during his press conference Tuesday. Rather than attempt to transfer to gain clearance and play elsewhere, Tuioti has decided to be an assistant coach for the Lobos this season, Gonzales said.

"I've had conversations with Tevaka and he wants to be a part of our program," Gonzales said. "I think Tevaka and his family made a great decision for him to be a student coach on our staff. That's one of the most competitive young men that made a really tough decision, that I support fully. I'm proud of him because it was hard on him because he loves to compete. He loves to play. He did what was best for his future." Tuioti, who will assist coaching the quarterbacks, is expected to be available to the media after Wednesday night's practice, which is closed to the public. He will also help with the offense and special teams during practice. - Albuquerque Journal

University of New Mexico senior defensive back Jerrick Reed II was named to the Preseason All-Conference Team by the league's media. Reed is the first Lobo to receive the preseason honor since OL Aaron Jenkins in 2018. Reed led the MWC in interceptions (4) last year when he was named first-team All-MWC as a safety. UNM had not a first-team All-MWC non-specialist selection since 2014. Reed's four interceptions last season put him at No. 5 in the nation in interceptions per game, and he added three pass breakups, a tackle for a loss and a fumble recovery. - Albuquerque Journal

The status of UNM quarterback Tevaka Tuioti will be revealed when preseason fall camp begins on Aug. 3, Gonzales said. Tuioti has yet to be cleared after three reported concussions, the latest occurring last Nov. 7 at Hawaii. Gonzales had said last month that he would announce before camp if Tuioti would be cleared or remain out. Tuioti, who won the starting job at the beginning of last season, will become a student assistant coach if he isn't cleared, Gonzales said. Tuioti hasn't spoken to the media since before the game against Hawaii, a decision made by Gonzales. During preseason fall camp, quarterbacks Terry Wilson (Kentucky transfer), Isaiah Chavez (Rio Rancho product) and Trae Hall are expected to compete for the starting job by taking the majority of the reps, Gonzales said. - Albuquerque Journal

Cjay Boone strikes again. The University of New Mexico wide receiver who transferred in from University of Missouri has helped lure another football player from Mizzou. Enter punter Aaron Rodriguez. He last played for Missouri, just as Boone and UNM offensive lineman Jack Buford did. Rodriguez, just like Boone and Buford, believes he has found a home with the Lobos. Things didn't work out for Rodriguez with the Tigers. He redshirted his freshman season in 2019 and played as the back-up punter in the coronavirus-delayed 2020 season. He is left with four seasons of eligibility because of the extra season the NCAA granted due to the pandemic. When Rodriguez entered the transfer portal after the 2020 season, Boone reached out to him. - Albuquerque Journal

University of New Mexico quarterback Tevaka Tuioti has yet to be cleared for team activities because of three reported concussions, the latest occurring on Nov. 7 against Hawaii. He has yet to be ruled out of team activities despite those concussions, even though multiple concussions can result in long-term disability, psychological issues and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), doctors say. And the University of New Mexico hasn't done much to resolve any mystery around its one-time starter.

UNM second-year coach Danny Gonzales has said only that Tuioti checks in with medical staff weekly, and if he is not cleared before the start of preseason camp on Aug. 3, he'll become a student assistant coach. Tuioti's status for the season will be determined before camp begins, Gonzales said. UNM has shielded Tuioti from interview requests from the media. He hasn't spoken publicly since his latest injury in November. Gonzales says it is because he believes Tuioti doesn't have answers for his status with "all the scenarios, the unknown out there of what is going to transpire with him." Gonzales wants to wait until there is a final determination before making the quarterback available to the media. - Albuquerque Journal

As Kansas football players get initiated this summer into what head coach Lance Leipold and his staff expect of them, a handful of Jayhawks already are getting noticed. The team's director of sports performance, Matt Gildersleeve, tabbed veteran quarterback Miles Kendrick KU's first "guy of the week" for all that the QB has done during the Jayhawks' strength and conditioning workouts so far. "Guy of the week is the guy that moves the needle the most in this program - not just maintains the standard or is consistent with it, but he is relentlessly pursuing the enhancement of our standard here," Gildersleeve explained in a video posted to KU football's social media accounts.

"He walks in the room and makes it better because he's there," Gildersleeve added, as he explained what he's looking for from a player before bestowing a Jayhawk with the honor. "He's gonna elevate those around him. He's gonna serve our room - he walks into it, he serves the people around him, he makes them better." A senior from Morgan Hill, Calif., Kendrick is now in his fourth year at KU. During the past several months in particular, teammates and coaches have lauded his approach as a leader within the facility. - Lawrence Journal World

Nate Jones, a dynamic running back who did not practice during the University of New Mexico's spring football drills, has entered the transfer portal, he announced on Twitter Friday night. Jones, a 5-foot-11, 205-pound freshman, was second on the team last season with 210 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 41 carries. Gonzales never specified why Jones was absent for the spring. Jones also would not comment on the reason. Gonzales only would say on Saturday that Jones did not meet "our expectations," just as he said in March. Jones showed explosiveness and great potential when he ran for 96 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries in a 39-33 loss at Hawaii on Nov. 7, which was his debut. He had sat out the week prior because he had been in close contact with a teammate who tested positive for COVID-19 and was near the end of a 14-day quarantine. - Albuquerque Journal
